2022-2023
Overview
While working at the Crucible, a not-for-profit industrial art studio in Oakland, I designed and created a series of pieces to be displayed and donated at the annual Fuego Showcase.
METAMORPHOSIS
For my first year designing for the Crucible, I hand cut, etched, and soldered a crown of copper butterflies. Each butterfly was individually hammer textured or etched with ferric chloride to create a unique pattern.
CELESTIAL BODIES
For my second year, I wanted to challenge myself by creating a three piece collection: a crown, glasses, and a mask. All hand crafted from sterling silver and completed within three weeks, this collection pushed not only my imagination as a jewelry designer but my technical skills.
PIECE 1: DREAMER
Inspired by the 2018 Met Gala theme, Heavenly Bodies, I wanted to continue my journey by making another crown. The brass base holds 13 individually crafted silver stars, interwoven with strings of glass beads. The silver wire holding the stars provides just the right amount of movement to bring the crown to life.
PIECE 2: SEEING STARS
Continuing the theme of silver stars, I designed and crafted a pair of "glasses".This was truly a test of my technical abilities as 10 half loops had to be soldered onto the glasses frame, each carefully attached without melting the one before.
PIECE 3: LIBERTY
Since the pandemic, masks have become an everyday functional staple. For the final piece in this collection, I wanted to reimagine the form of masks to create an intricate overlay.
